Blurb:
For five years, Cecilia Morgan’s entire existence has revolved around playing personal assistant to self-centered former NFL quarterback Wade Carter. But just when she finally gives her notice, his father’s health fails, and Wade whisks her back to his hometown. CC will stay for his dad—for now—even if that means ignoring how sexy her boss is starting to look in his Wranglers.
To say CC’s notice is a bombshell is an insult to bombs. Wade can’t imagine his life without his “left tackle.” She’s the only person who can tell him “no” and strangely, it’s his favorite quality. He’ll do anything to keep her from leaving, even if it means playing dirty and dragging her back to Credence, Colorado, with him.
But now they’re living under the same roof, getting involved in small-town politics, and bickering like an old married couple. Suddenly, five years of fighting is starting to feel a whole lot like foreplay. What’s a quarterback to do when he realizes he might be falling for his “left tackle”? Throw a Hail Mary she’ll never see coming, of course.
Nothing but Trouble is a heartwarming story and a great beginning for a new series. It’s a familiar trope when a relationship goes from business to pleasure but pleasantly surprised there was more to it. CC Morgan has been the PA for Wade Carter for the last 5 ½ years and can’t wait for this job to end. Being on call 24/7, she has seen it all from 3 a.m. calls to go buy condoms to consoling ex-girlfriends when the relationship ends. When he decides to spend the next 3 months in his hometown and she’s expected to go with him, she’s had enough. He knows he’s on borrowed time with CC and hopes he can convince her to stay on but she’s determined to leave and move to California. Wade has 3 months to convince her but what throws them both for a loop is when they start to look at each other in a new light. It scares the heck out of CC and makes Wade a bit jealous.
CC and Wade were very interesting characters and I loved how they developed over the story. The author created them and they had depth to them and you felt for them and what they are going through. CC saw Wade as a non-committing bachelor and was never going to change his ways. Wade saw CC only as his PA and nothing more. Seeing him working on the ranch, Wade started to look very sexy as a farmer and a cowboy. She had a hard time putting him back in the box of being the boss. Wade’s friends were becoming her friends and they learned things that Wade wasn’t privy to in the least. Wade started to question what he really knew about his PA and it wasn’t much. I liked the small interactions and how they slowly got to know each other personally. Each had a personal secret and once it was spoken it said so much about the other. These were subtle changes that there was more to the other person and that blurred the lines between them. That wasn’t the only thing happening between them. The sexual tension was slowly building and at times quite funny. It wasn’t rushed but you can feel the friction and knew it was coming.
Nothing but Trouble was an entertaining story and I had a fun time reading it. The small town setting and the introduction of secondary characters made it feel cozier and whet my curiosity on what future couples may be developing. The town troubles of attracting women made for a great plot and how Wade and CC had opposite opinions on this matter, intensified feelings in their relationship. The secondary romance of Wade’s brother Wyatt was absolutely adorable and I’m glad to see it all work out for him. The secondary characters, the subplots and the main romance, all weaved together seamlessly and I read it with ease. Overall this was a well written contemporary romance and I’m definitely going back to Credence for more.
