This story is interesting in such a way that it reminds me of watching a train wreck in slow motion. You know it is going to happen, and you can’t help but watch. ~ Alyn, Guilty Pleasures

I had a very difficult time with this book but was not disappointed. Love Square is based on true events and follows the life of an author torn between the past and the present. Sam is a writer in a slump. Not a writing slump, but a marriage one. She and her husband Aiden have become more like friends than husband and wife and she is feeling lost and unwanted. Ever since she and her husband Aiden began trying unsuccessfully to have children, it seems as though things have fallen apart. Trying her best to appeal to him, it seems as though he looks beyond her instead of at her. When she leaves for a signing event for her latest book, Sam encounters a blast from the past when handsome hunk Jacob, shows up asking for a book to be signed. Jacob was her high school ex, and he broke her heart but still kept her interest. Even now he was as gorgeous as ever and she couldn’t help but to look.
Feeling alone, Sam decides to meet Jacob for a meal and realizes the spark has not faded even all of these years later. When he takes advantage of her easy going nature and kisses her, Sam melts into him like a puddle of goo. Trying to be the good wife, she eventually backs away but keeps in touch with Jacob online for some e-mail fun. This leads to some heavy fantasizing via e-mail and eventually the pair gives into their urges. The problem? Sam is married, and still has Aiden at home completely unaware that a problem exists. Or is he?
I would go into more detail, but I do not want to spoil the story. It is told from Sam’s viewpoint and really goes into what she felt like when her husband ignored her as well as her motivation behind the cheating. The problem I had with the story, was that the character is constantly justifying why it is ok for her to cheat on her husband and when someone (not saying who) cheats on her, she has the nerve to get possessive. This did not sit well with me but regardless, it made for interesting reading. As the inevitable plays out and secrets are revealed, Sam has a big decision to make. In her eyes, the choice is hers, but if she were able to look beneath the surface, she might realize that there are more players in the game. This is the other area that boggled me but I felt it was well played. For a cheater to assume no one knows what they are doing , is careless. Sam literally makes up excuses to leave Aiden home so that she can be gone for days at a time. Does she honestly think he is unaware of the truth? If she stepped back to see the big picture, she could see there is motivation behind his sudden sweetness. No matter what, it is inevitable that one person will be left heartbroken, and there are no guarantees that the brokenhearted won’t come back to fight for what they want. After all, the heart wants what the heart wants right?
If you have ever been betrayed or have been in a predicament between two loves, this story may give a new perspective. Regardless, the story is interesting in such a way that it reminds me of watching a train wreck in slow motion. You know it is going to happen, and you can’t help but watch.
