In the northernmost reaches of Scotland, where a string of little islands in the North Sea stretches towards Norway, lives Gertie MacIntyre, a proud island girl by birth. Her social circle is small but tight: family and friends, particularly the women in her knitting circle. In the whitewashed cottages of their hometown, everyone knows everyone, and the ladies of the knitting circle know more than most. In a place of long dark winters and geographic isolation, the knitting circle is a precious source of gossip, home, laughter, and comfort for them all. And while she knits, Gertie’s busily plotting what to do with the rest of her life.
When Gertie develops a crush on Callum Frost, who owns the local airline, she dares herself to take a job as an air stewardess on the little plane that serves the local islands. Terrifying at first, the sixteen-seat puddle jumper also offers the first taste of real freedom she’s ever known. Will Gertie’s future lie in the skies? Or will she need to go further afield to find the adventure she craves?
Close Knit is a wonderful read and shouldn’t be missed! ~ Amanda – Simply Love Books
Close Knit by Jenny Colgan is an endearing story of a young woman coming into her own. Thirty-year-old Gertie MacIntyre lives with her mother and grandmother, works at the local grocery store and is a member of the local Knitting Club, aka gossip central. Morag needs help for her small airline and Gertie might be up for the challenge if she could get past her shyness. Realizing she needs to shake things up, she moves out and takes the job working to check in passengers for the small airline. unfortunately, living in a small town in Northern Scotland, there isn’t much chance of anything staying a secret or people in your business. She pushes herself to take chances and an unexpected turn of events gets her a chance at happiness.
The story ends with a dramatic finish and shows how truly strong Gertie can be when there is a live or die situation. I simply adore Gertie and how her knitting served as a strength for her in the end. She saved the day along with a bunch of others and she knows who has her back.
This story can be read as a stand-alone but it comes next after last year’s story, Summer Skies. Close Knit is a wonderful read and shouldn’t be missed!
