A romance with a hero I absolutely adored, Hard Crush was a good read. ~Sharon – Simply Love Books
I always have mixed feelings about second chance romances; I love them because the couple has history and there’s something to be said for that and yet I hate them because all too often the couple ends up rehashing the past frequently and unfortunately that happened quite a bit in this book. Despite that, this book was a solid four stars so that’s saying I did really like it but it wasn’t without problems. Hard Crush was a captivating, sweet, sexy, yet emotional second chance story I enjoyed.
Hank and Abby dated all through high school and they had big plans; they’d go to college (together) and return to their hometown outside of Chicago where she’d teach English and he’d teach science, but Hank was destined for bigger things and MIT came calling with a full ride scholarship and Abby decided to let him go so he could save the world with his genius. I’m never a fan of one person making decisions for another so the fact Abby did that was a strike against her, and it broke Hank’s heart but also made him work harder and it changed the way he approached his life and the way he dated. He didn’t allow women to get close and while he stayed friends with many people he went to high school with and has donated a lot of money to the school, he never returned. Now ten years later his friend Jack has him there to see how things are going and walking down the hall he hears a laugh, one that is familiar and he can’t believe Abby is there teaching just like she planned.
Abby is gobsmacked when Hank walks into her classroom. Seeing him again in person after so many years throws her for a loop and the fact that he seems excited to see her despite the way she broke his heart makes her wonder how life would have been different. Soon they are at their reunion together and then Hank is making sure Abby knows he wants more with her.
I enjoyed this book a lot and appreciated that Hank wasn’t bitter about Abby breaking up with him. He’s a billionaire working at his own company and time is at a premium but he makes time for Abby. Abby on the other hand refused to go all in; she didn’t want to be “left again.” I really wanted to reach into the book and shake her and remind her she was the one who left, yes Hank physically left to go to school but she left the relationship by breaking things off and refusing to even discuss it, seriously she drove me a bit nuts. Their relationship in this book was a bit of a rollercoaster, but Hank was determined and Abby eventually realized he was worth some compromise.
