Moira Green is perfectly content with her life. She has a rewarding career and plenty of wonderful friends, including the members of her weekly book club. Then everything in her life goes topsy-turvy when the town council plans to demolish the site of her mother’s beloved café to make room for much-needed parking. Moira is determined to save her mother’s business, so she swallows her pride and asks Gil Ryan for help.
Moira and Somerset Lake’s mayor were good friends once, the kind who could laugh at everything and nothing at all. Until one night changed everything between them. And now, with Gil supporting the council’s plans, Moira is forced to find another way to save Sweetie’s—and it involves campaigning against Gil. Going head-to-head in a battle of wills reveals more than either of them are ready for, and as the election heats up, so does their attraction. But without a compromise in sight, can these two be headed for anything but disaster?
I enjoyed the community of Somerset Lake and how a sweet romance made this one of my favorites in the series. ~ Amanda – Simply Love Books
The Good Luck Café is the final installment in the Somerset Lake series and I have to say it has been an enjoyable small town to visit and get acquainted with its residents. Moira and Gil’s story is a slow build of a romance with a bit of history between them and a definite attraction between them. Moira and Gil have been friends forever it seems until they’re not. Gil has had only eyes for Moira but lately, she’s been going out of her way to avoid him. Now her mother’s bakery is going to be torn down to make way for a parking lot and needs help from stopping that from happening. She needs the support of Mayor Gil and decides to act.
Oh, what an interesting story and how quickly both main characters are spurred into action when the status quo is disturbed. Moira didn’t like the fact that her mother’s bakery was going to be demolished that has been a staple in town for over 30 years. She’ll do whatever it takes to keep it from leaving, even if it means running for mayor. Gil is also facing a change himself both with the upcoming mayoral race and the home situation with his younger brother Doug, who has Down Syndrome. His brother wants to move out and live on his own but his mother wants him to stay put. Both his mother and brother have put Gil in an uncomfortable position because he wants to make both of them happy and knows he’ll have to disappoint someone. It’s hard to let go but change is inevitable, and in some cases, they are out of our control.
The biggest change Moira faced is the secret that she’s been keeping close to her heart. Embarrassed and feeling guilty, it was exposed and now she had to face it head on. Family and friends definitely can surprise you and she learns that she didn’t have to face things alone. It is always good to see the friends they have rally, support or even joke around with both Moira and Gil. The friends, the humor and the developing romance between Moira and Gil, made this a delightful story from beginning to the end.
I enjoyed the community of Somerset Lake and how a sweet romance made this one of my favorites in the series. The author definitely has a knack of creating likeable and realistic characters, dealing with relatable problems, and solving them with help from their family and friends. Annie Rains is a force in contemporary romance and is an author all should check out.
