Home Game as a good story but just a bit bland. ~ Sharon – Simply Love Books

I’m not going to lie, I had to look several times to see if the same author had really written this one after reading the first book in this series because this book was so normal for the most part. That’s not a bad thing, it was just very different from the first book and I was expecting more over the top craziness. That said these characters didn’t grab me quite like before, but I think that had more to do with their situation than anything else.

Ryan is a new player for the Vancouver Wolves hockey team and because of an accident on the ice last season playing this team in which a player was severely injured his new teammates are freezing him out. He’s tried to be a part of the team but they aren’t having it, so he’s devoted himself to training and doing the best job he can on the ice but even the team owner and general manager has told him he needs to figure out a way to be a bigger part of the team. While trying to enter his receipts for his CPA at a coffee shop he can’t figure out what he’s doing wrong to make the program disappear which a young woman steps in and show him. He offers to drop her off where she’s going when she freaks out that she’s missed her bus and he takes her and figures out that it’s a homeless shelter and because they were late she’ll be on the streets that night so he offers his couch. There’s a vibe between them because he truly isn’t interested in her and she’s worried he’ll expect something from her and her hackles are up, the next morning as she leaves he hands her his card with his phone number on it in case she ever needs anything.

Waking up in a hospital and realizing she was attacked and her shoulder and arm are wrecked Zoey has no idea what she’s going to do since she can’t work and her bag isn’t with her which meant it was left at the restaurant where she was attacked. What she doesn’t expect is for Ryan to show up and then offer to let her stay with him until she’s on her feet again with no other choice she agrees but only after he agrees to let her pay him back for anything he buys for her.

This was an interesting set up and it took a long time for Zoey to let her walls down and accept help and realize Ryan didn’t want anything from her. Ryan had no idea why it was important for him to help Zoey just that is way and as they became friends they learned more about one another and attraction began to form. This was a VERY slow burn story, like almost to the end slow burn but honestly for this couple and their situation it worked. While I did think things worked out a bit too easily for Zoey and their big miscommunication (one of my least favorite things in romance) could have been avoided I applaud the author for having  Zoey learn that she was capable of standing on her own two feet.

I enjoyed this story but I didn’t feel the heat and attraction between Ryan and Zoey like I did in the first book and because it was such a slow burn at times it became a bit monotonous.

Overall, Home Game as a good story but just a bit bland.
