Don’t drink and text.
Even on the cusp of forty, I had to learn that the hard way. After discovering my best friend, who I was supposed to grow old and single with, got engaged, I drowned my loneliness in one too many Old Fashioneds and woke up with thirty-nine responses from every available man in my phone. Yup, I even texted my plumber...and he turned me down.
Apparently, my liquor-infused text said that while I don’t need a man, maybe I’d be down for a constant sidekick for movies, plus-one invites, and dinner on the table after my grueling shifts as a concierge doctor—till death do us part...and was anyone in?
Through the absolute mortification of thirty-seven rejections, shockingly, I realize two men have said yes. Behind Bachelor Door #1 is Rob, my old high school crush: the comfortable, dependable boy-next-door. Behind Bachelor Door #2 is Darius, the exciting, flashy news reporter about to hit it big. Does this mean I’ll have to get out of my yoga pants and actually go on dates now?
Dax, the local bartender who got me into this disaster in the first place—remember the Old Fashioneds?—can’t believe I’ve given up on finding true love. What does a tattooed, broody twentysomething know about carving out a future for yourself, anyway?
Too bad the further into this hot mess I get, the less I know about who I am. And I’m going to have to figure out exactly what I need if I ever want to find a true happily ever after.
While It’s Raining Men is a rom-com, it was balanced with some powerful, emotional moments making it a highly enjoyable and completely entertaining summer romance. ~ Sharon – Simply Love Book Reviews
It’s Raining Men by Julie Hamerlee was an engaging age-gap romance. This book explored a woman’s life as she’s about to turn 40; changing relationships with friends, lack of companionship, married to her job, leaving her questioning her life’s choices. I enjoyed the funny banter, the quirky characters, and the growth of the main character throughout this book.
Annie is a concierge doctor in Chicago who is on call for her patients 24/7 which doesn’t leave her much time for a social life or her friends. Her roommate, Kelly, has been out of town helping her parents for an extended time and Annie is feeling lonely and a bit isolated. When Kelly announces she’s engaged it throws Annie for a loop and after quite a few drinks at the local bar, she sends out a text to the men in her contacts saying she’s looking for companionship, and is ready to be married, without all the games of dating. While she is a bit mortified the next morning one because of the text and two because the cute, younger bartender brought her home and stayed (platonically) with her overnight, she gets two responses that intrigue her. One is from Rob who she grew up with living next door and their mother’s are best friends. The other is Darius a local television personality she met recently when he did a segment on her practice. Both men and interested and she decides to go all in and date them both before making a decision.
I really liked Annie’s character; she wasn’t perfect but she had a good heart and was always jumping in to help others. She was witty and smart and I appreciated her love of trivia. While it becomes apparent that her job gets in the way of her relationships with her friends, I actually found that part of the story a bit over the top. Her friend Kelly was just a royal b*tch throughout the story and it got real old real quick and while I understand it was necessary to help Annie reevaluate her life, I felt it could have been done with much less drama. As she dates Rob who honestly was a bit of a bore and Darius to was a bit smarmy and too smooth, Dax (the younger 27 year old bartender and new platonic roommate) worries she’s settling and should hold out for love. Soon Annie begins to see Dax in a new light and while she worries incessantly over the age difference and the fact they are in different places in their lives she enjoys everything he’s offering.
While this is a rom-com, it was balanced with some powerful, emotional moments making It’s Raining Men a highly enjoyable and completely entertaining summer romance.
