Interview and Giveaway – Scott Hildreth

A few weeks ago Afrodyt posted in our reviewers group that “We JUST HAD to read HUNG by Scott Hildreth!” I was like “Another MC romance”  I LOVE MC romances but am tired of the series that have cheating, deaths of main characters and things thrown in just for the SHOCK factor. Not to mention many are becoming so similar to each other it’s sad.  BUT I know Afrodyt wouldn’t steer us wrong so I looked it up on Goodreads. I was digging the description but still hesitant, then I got to the end of the description and read this from Scott “HUNG is a stand-alone MC Romance with an HEA, and is book IV in the Selected Sinners series of stand-alone full length novels. This novel is 71,000 words of action-packed erotic romance. There is no cheating, nor is there sharing of partners, but the sex is detailed, graphically depicted, and frequent. PLEASE be over 18 to enjoy this book.”  THAT ONE PARAGRAPH SOLD ME!  I am anal about reading so I started with book 1, MAKING THE CUT, and was immediately HOOKED.  I read the first 4 books in just a couple of days and was glad Ex-Con was coming out soon!

Your Alpha Males in the Selected Sinners series are some of the fiercest I’ve ever come across. Can you shed some light about how you craft the heroes in your novels?

Thank you for the compliment (I guess it’s a compliment.) People often ask about my heroes and heroines. I don’t craft them so much. I decide their age, background, current living conditions, and location. The character simply takes it from there. I do believe we write about what we know, and although I have never been a violent person, I do live by my own set of rules, and have never been one to back away if I have a chance to stand up for what I believe is right.

So, short answer after a lengthy explanation would be this: my characters are an extension of me.

Of the heroes you’ve written in all of your current books, which one would you say is most like you?

Well, Jackson in EX-CON is most like me in all regards. We’re pretty similar in most respects.

In your book, Confessions of a Smut Author, your heroine, Cheryl, asks the question, “Is what an author writes any indication of what kind of person are?” How would you answer that question?

I believe we write about what we know. I really do. But, we always write fiction, so is it true or is it fiction? Well, it’s fiction. Are my writings my beliefs? Some are, some are not. I’ve written about religious heroes, agnostic heroines, and spiritual parents. I certainly can’t be all of the above. Also, I’ve created pro-abortion heroines and anti-abortion heroines. I guess my answer is this: I am not who I write about. Some of my characters share my beliefs, some do not. If I only wrote about me and my beliefs, it would be a bunch of one-sided books, and a pretty tiring shelf of books.

Given that male erotica authors are in the minority, what drew you in and what do you love about writing in this genre?

During a discussion with an agent on my first book, Broken People, she stated my style and prose was something that really couldn’t be taught. She asked if I could write erotica, and said my writing style would be perfect for erotica.  I had never even read a romance novel, let alone erotica. But (and without reading a single word of erotica) I wrote Baby Girl. It went to #1 in erotica. The rest, as is said, is history.

Do you get crap from your buddies because you write romance novels?

My friends, family, and even the men I ride with are all supportive of my decision to write erotica. Many of my biker friends have Ol’ Ladies that read the books religiously.

Who are some of the authors past and present that inspire you?

Tom Robbins, Nicole Krauss, Penny Reid, Michelle Hodkin, Jamie Begley, R.J. Lewis, and without EL James, we’d all be peddling this work out of the trunks of our cars.

You self publish and I’ve noticed you crank out new material pretty frequently. Do you make time to do your own reading and if so, what are you reading right now?

I write roughly a book a month. The cycle with erotica is roughly a month (that the book stays on the charts as a best seller). I always try to keep one on the #1 Best Seller list. So, I do stay busy writing, that’s for sure. But, of late, I have still taken the time to have a look at The Paper Swan, by Leylah Attar, Neanderthal Seeks Human, by Penny Reid, and Kiss a Stranger, by R.J Lewis.
