As I began reading this book I realized it is the third book in a series. however I was able to keep up with this story and honestly I’m a little glad I didn’t have to read the first two books because they dealt with a gypsy and time travel. So while those things were mentioned in this book, I didn’t have to read about them too much and that was a plus for me. I did however very much enjoy this young adult story about a girl who is the daughter of Hollywood royalty, her boyfriend, her friends, and the drama the ensues when her absent mother returns. Being a teenager is never easy and when your life has been played out in front of the media no matter how hard you try to avoid it, it’s every worse and when the mother that gave you up when you were five returns with a brother that she gave up before she met your Dad…well yeah, your life is pretty much an episode of Jerry Springer. While at times this book seemed a little out there at other times it seemed perfectly normal, but one thing is for sure My Not So Super Sweet Life was completely entertaining and enjoyable.
Cat Crawford would love to just be a typical 16 year old girl but unfortunately that wasn’t in the cards for her. However life is pretty good right now. Her Dad is about to marry a woman who makes him happy and promises to be a great stepmom. Her cousin whom she met when she went back in time is now living in her house as an exchange student, and she has a great boyfriend.
Lucas Capelli can’t believe how lucky he is to have a great girl like Cat in his life and he intends to keep it that way. He also plans to finally stand up to his father and explain why he wants to devote more time to his art and no longer play soccer the game he started playing when his older brother passed away to please his father. He believes he and Cat are solid but when Cat’s vindictive mother surfaces she causes all kinds of problems and leaves him at Cat at odds.
I enjoyed this book despite not reading the first two in the series. The characters were interesting and even though they were young and in the media spotlight they weren’t overly angsty. Yes Cat had some moments but her Mother resurfacing and bringing along a brother she didn’t know existed I think she was entitled to a few tears, some hurt feelings, and a good mad.
Honestly My Not So Super Sweet Life would be a very appropriate book for the teenage set; it’s a little bit crazy but it also showed that you can let people and situations get the best of you or you can keep your head high and keep moving forward.
