Kimber’s Geared for Pleasure Review
What is Steampunk Romance?

GEARED FOR PLEASURE, Book One of the Elemental Steam series, has two contiguous stories-Earthly Desires and Fiery Temptations. In each of those stories I could have kept going forever. The world was so big, their stories were so complex, that it was hard to rein myself in waiting for book two. 🙂

What initially started as my homage to The Smutketeers, my group blog and inspiration, became something far more complicated. An entire world.

Theorrey.

It’s a fascinating place that I hope readers will want to visit, though I doubt anyone in their right mind would want to live there. Its hard and harsh landscapes, its rigid societal structure, none of those things are conducive to happiness and serenity. My characters seem to thrive there, but they are made of far tougher stuff than I.

The challenges of this world, the machinery and history, the caste system and the details of the civilization became an obsession. From the mechanical messengers of The Khepri (you’ll find out) to the dodge on the Deviant and the workings of the Siren (again, you’ll find out)—I was focused on every aspect, every gear and rivet of the world. So was my sci-fi loving husband, who definitely helped me make my flimsy ideas more substantial.

What wasn’t challenging were the strong heroines and their heroes. They guided me through Theorrey in ways I hadn’t expected, and told me more about the world than any of my research could. They scared me a little, broke my heart and made me root for them. (plus I’m a little in love with Bodhan…and Wulf…and Freeman….you definitely want to find out about them)

Steampunk by definition is “a sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, altered history and speculative fiction.” Usually set in Victorian era or Wild West.

I called Geared the sub sub genre of steampunk “Clockworky steampunkitude” because…well, because I’m a little odd, and I like to dance to the beat of my own mechanized marching band.

The Elemental aspect of my series completely corresponds with Steampunk as well as Urban Fantasy. The elements are powerful in each genre. Magic and immortality. Harnessing life at its essence. Alchemy. Each of my main female characters represents an element; Earth, Fire, Air, Water. Their coming together is vital for so many reasons.

…you’ll find out. =)

Thank you so much for inviting me and letting me share. I hope everyone enjoys Dare and Phina’s stories!

Great blog! I am fascinated by the Steampunk genre, although I have not read any yet. I’m looking forward to delving into the world you created. Thank you for giving me that extra push to explore something new.

    Cheers!!!

  2. I have never read steampink before. I am intrigued by it but don’t really understand it fully. I would hope reading some would help with that. Love Rachel’s work though.

  3. The only steampunk books that I’ve are the Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger, and I loved them. Geared for Please sounds amazing!

  4. Na

I’m discovering more steam punk romance to add to my TBR list. I think I have read books with steam punk elements but steam punk romance in particular is stll new to me.

  6. Rachel–SOOO glad to have you at GP today. You already know this but I’ll say it again. I LOVED your new series. I was completely drawn into your world and thought about it weeks after reading. You painted the perfect picture and your characters were as colorful as they come. I was totally intrigued by all of them and can’t wait for future books in the series.

I read The League series by Sherrilyn Kenyon and enjoyed it.

    THANKS again!

I would love to own my own copy, I had the pleasure of reviewing the book but I would love to say it is mine. Bodhan can make a nun desire sin of the carnal nature. Freeman is interesting and I canna wait to see more of him and Wolf-he’s a mystery at the moment, isn’t he.

  8. I have been wanting to read this book so badly. I find steampunk to be an interesting genre and have read so many reviews that make me more hungry to get my hands on it.

  9. I’ve enjoyed the few steampunk stories I have read–I think the most well known are the Meljean Brooks stories. Delilah Devlin has a short steampunky quickie 🙂 I think there have been a couple others that aren’t coming to mind… Can’t wait to read yours, RG!

  10. What a wonderful blog! When I look at your definition of Steampunk I though that I may have read this genre. Until I read Kimber’s comments….Then I knew that I have read it. I have so enjoyed your other books and this looks like a very interesting alter-universe. I look forward to adding it to my TBR list.
Thanks for joining us on GP. It was wonderful having you here!

  11. Steampunk is one genre I haven’t read anything in. But Geared For Pleasure will change that. The book cover is fantastic.

  16. I have only read a few steampunk novels. Some are intriguing but I must confess that I am a little disturbed by the sentient little gear organisms in some books…that just creeps me out, lol. Good luck with the new release…I am sure it will be as enjoyable as your other works!

  17. It might be too late to be in it to win it, but I was introduced to Steampunk after winning a book in a contest and I instantly fell in love with the genre.. the best part of about it is the unfettered use of imagination. Anything is possible! Very cool,
