Becky’s review: Deviations is one of my very favorite series. I love Tobias and Noah and Phan is so precious, so needy, you can’t help loving him.
The first book, Submission, was about contracts, negotiation, and the sub learning to submit. Domination takes the next step in the BDSM world. You think it’s easy being the Dom? Think again. This book digs into Master Tobias’ thoughts and motivations, what he needs, what he wants and ultimately what scares the crap out of him. Tobias allows Noah to see a side of him no sub has ever seen, and then regrets it. Noah, on the other hand, knows Tobias has to have this kind of emotional release. In order to better serve his Master, Noah has to balance Tobias’ need to be the Big Bad Top against the hurting human being that lurks under Tobias’ skin.
We see Tobias and Noah as essentially men who are totally alone except for each other. They go to the club, they scene among other club members, they have jobs and professional partners, but when they go home, they go home to an empty houses or apartment. Holidays are something to escape from, with work or travel. Memories of childhood holidays are sweet and exquisitely painful. It breaks your heart while letting you rejoice at what is to come if the men will just allow it.
I love reading about a gay couple building a relationship without the drama and trauma of coming out. It’s who they are. They’re discrete when they need to be but not afraid of their love for each other. Noah has more concerns than Tobias does because of his job as a police officer, but he is able to quickly shed his job when he is with Tobias and becomes Noah, Tobias’ boy instead of Noah the cop. Tobias admires this ability in Noah but is unable to make that kind of shift from Tobias the lonely man to Tobias the Dom as quickly and easily, which causes tension and anguish.
We find out a little more about the horror that has been Phantom’s life and why he is such a masochist. Phantom still loves Tobias and Tobias loves Phantom, so why did they split up? How does Noah fit into their lives? Will Tobias be able to let go of his love for Phan, his fear of being abandoned, his determination to be the perfect Dom and finally collar Noah? Will Noah have to become a switch or can he fully serve Tobias as a submissive only? So many questions are answered in this book.
Love, love, love this book and this series. Deviations: Domination can be read as a stand-alone but is so much richer as the second book in the series.
